There is not that much 40mm SYWish stuff about out there and when I saw Front Rank had done some 40mm generals for their AWI range I was intrigued enough to purchase a couple . They are rather expensive but very nice , above is one of their Hessian Generals who will represent a rather more rotund General Comte D' Fru-Fru.
This figure is General Howe and unlike the other figures doesn't come with a selection of alternate heads , he is to portray General Carlsburg of the Allied forces .
This is all well and good but how do theses VERY chunky figures match up with their slender Prince August brethren ? - not to badly I think, I have not yet based them but when done they will look okay . Strange when I look at the above photo I think for all the accuracy and detail of the Front Rank ones the Prince August have a bit more character !?.
You've done a fine job of all of them, but i'd agree that the PA figures have a certain something that is lacking in the more 'workmanlike' FR figures. In general, i think there's a general lack of artistic flair in most modern ranges - plenty of technical ability in the sculpting, but a lack of style somewhere...
ReplyDeleteThey are beautifully cast and detailed , but lack any personality
DeleteI was going to say the newer round ones fall a bit flat, but yes DC has nailed it, the work of a technician rather than an artist.
ReplyDeleteStill very handsomely painted though and I'm sure he will be a steady officer in battle.
The original Holger Erikson horses are masterpieces
DeleteI think the FR ones are a bit 'wooden' - but the PA figs see to have some life in them

The 40mm section of the HE site is still under construction. They do have mounted officers in the 54mm range so maybe they have them in the 40mm range..
ReplyDeleteAre the pistol holsters cast on the officers or do they come with the officers as separate pieces?
Cast to the officers legs , the horse comes with saddle and blanket . Most of the generals come with three separate heads .
DeleteGive me the PA general anytime -he has oodles of character!
ReplyDeleteYes I agree - perhaps 'new' is not always better !
DeleteI have to agree with all the comments above. Many modern figures are perhaps technically accurate and detailed and occasionally even anatomically accurate, but they completely lack character, flair, life, motion and dynamism. Give me an Erikson, Suren or Gilder any day.
ReplyDeletei love the pics!
